What I wish for her…

i_hope_you_dance_by_lee_ann_womack1So I have officially been a mother for 39 days. I think I am doing fairly well despite the absence of my much missed nine to ten hours of sleep a night. Baby Meghan is a true blessing in my life. Words can’t express the depth of my love for this new little miracle!

I may be like many new moms in that I now constantly worry as I think of all the things that could happen to her that I don’t want to happen to her and all the things that could happen to her that I do want to happen to her. I have the opportunity to travel to New York City and San Francisco for work to accept awards for my agency for projects that I managed at work. But I don’t want to travel. Suddenly I want nothing to do with methods of transport that take me tens of thousands of feet off the ground and many miles away from my little one. I need to be with her as much as possible–because, in my mind, no one can take as good a care of her as I can, and God forbid, what if something happened to me? Who would tell her to never fear those mountains in the distance? To never settle for the path of least resistance?

You may recognize those last few sentences as lines from a popular song that I always enjoy listening to when it comes on the radio, and its crooner says exactly what I want to say to my daughter. So I’ll copy the lyrics below, and refer her to this link so she’ll always know (regardless of where I may be) what  I hope for her.

“I Hope You Dance”

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they’re worth taking
Lovin’ might be a mistake
But it’s worth making
Don’t let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)
